Focus On Compassion
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a Psychological Model that provides a focus for our clinical work.
At CBT For You, we believe that compassion is key.
CFT was developed by Paul Gilbert because he observed how the impact of emotions like shame and self-criticism can be so detrimental to a person’s well-being and mental health.
All human beings feel pain and suffering because each one of us will experience difficulty in our lives. That is the human condition.
All humans have ‘tricky’ brains which have evolved over a long time. This means that when we feel shame and/or pain in the face of difficulties our ‘tricky’ brains can start to criticize who we are, what we do, how we feel.
Often, as humans, the judgements we hold of ourselves and the compassion we offer ourselves is very different to the compassion we would offer to another human if they were in pain or if they were suffering.
Learning how to focus and offer our own selves the compassion and comfort we need in the same way we do for others is the focus of CFT.
